These easy air fryer french toast sticks can be made in the air fryer {or oven!} for a delicious kid-friendly breakfast. Double the batch and freeze leftovers for a quick weekday breakfast that will start everyone’s day out right!
I’m on a mission to make any and everything in the air fryer! Not really, but it has definitely felt like it lately! I hate buying appliances that only have one or two purposes, so figuring how out to get the most out of this bad boy is definitely a priority.
Impulse buy turned countertop mainstay, the airfryer may be little, but it is mighty when I’m trying to quickly cook small batches of things for myself or my kids.
This is how the air fryer french toast sticks were born. I can cut this recipe down and make just a slice or two at a time for the kids with the air fryer (while I have a veggie omelete or something else going on the stove top for me!), or I can bulk it up and use a sheet pan to batch cook and freeze for later.
How to make French Toast Sticks in the Air Fryer
1.Preheat Air fryer to 370.
2. Beat eggs, milk, maple syrup, and vanilla together either by hand of with a high speed blender. Using a blender will really allow the mixture to combine well and absorb into the bread during later steps. Pour mixture into a shallow bowl or pan.
3. Cut each slice of bread into thirds. Dredge the bread slices in the egg mixture. Letting each side soak for 30 seconds or so.
4. Spray the air fryer basket generously with cooking spray. Some recipes for french toast in the air fryer state to put parchment paper in the bottom. In my experience- that’s not the best idea.
The parchment paper burnt to a crisp. (Maybe there’s a trick here, but I would rather let the basket soak a few minutes than fan down my smoke detectors!)
5. Let extra egg drip off of the bread slices and place into the air fryer basket.
6.Cook for 3 minutes in the air fryer. Using a spatula, carefully flip each slice and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
7. Top with powdered sugar and/or maple syrup!
Use the Same Recipe for French Toast Bites or Slices!
While sticks work well for toddlers to handle, if you would rather make french toast bites or just regular bread slices- this same recipe will work.
Now that I have had french toast made with a flavored batter (and with sweet, thick brioche bread) I can’t go back! French toast made with this recipe is delicious even without extra maple syrup on top.
But, a little extra syrup makes them a whole lot sweeter, which is yummy too.
How to Batch Cook and Freeze French Toast Sticks for Later
My favorite part about this recipe is that they freeze and reheat so well! This makes weekday mornings EASY with a couple of french toast sticks and some fruit for breakfast, the kids are happy and I’m happy.
The thing about making a large batch of french toast in the air fryer is that it will take several batches to cook everything. Unless you have a large air fryer, I recommend batch cooking these on a sheet pan or a griddle to save on time. See my recommendations below for cooking the french toast sticks in the oven or on the stovetop.
To freeze the cooked french toast sticks: Place them in a single layer on a sheet pan until they are all frozen (at least 30 minutes). Transfer to a large plastic freezer bag or air tight container. They will last up to 3 months in the freezer.
Reheating Frozen French Toast sticks in the Microwave
If you are reheating in the microwave (my preferred method), it will take you only a couple of minutes.
- Place frozen french toast sticks on a microwavable safe plate. Cover loosely with paper towel.
- Microwave for 45 seconds, flip, and microwave for an additional 45 seconds.
- Let sit for a minute or so to cool down and enjoy!
Reheating Frozen French Toast sticks in the Air Fryer
Just as easy as it is to make french toast sticks in the air fryer, you can reheat the frozen french toast in there as well!
- Preheat Air fryer to 360 for 2-3 minutes.
- Place french toast sticks into the basket.
- Cook for 1-2 minutes, flip, then cook for 1-2 minutes longer until the inside is warmed through.
Tips Tricks and FAQS for Air Fryer French Toast Sticks
When Batch Cooking to Freeze: Make sure you slightly undercook the french toast if you are planning to reheat using the air fryer, otherwise the end result will be extra crispy.
Gluten Free: These french toast sticks are not gluten free as the recipe is written. To make them gluten free, just use your favorite gluten free bread. The batter recipe does not have gluten, so you can still enjoy the flavored egg batter on a bread that works for you.
For Fluffy French Toast: To get the fluffiest, puffiest french toast sticks you can, you will want to beat the eggs in a blender versus just whipping by hand. Also, make sure to let the bread sit for 30-60 seconds on each side so that the egg mixture gets soaked into the bread instead of just sitting on the outside.
